[əʊ'dets], Clifford, amerikanischer Dramatiker, * Philadelphia (Pa.) 18. 7. 1906, ✝ Los Angeles (Calif.) 15. 8. 1963; schrieb in den 30er-Jahren sozialkritische, v. a. die Probleme der unteren Mittelklasse in der Depressionszeit spiegelnde, politisch engagierte Theaterstücke aus sozialistischer Perspektive. Mitbegründer des Group Theatre (1931) in New York, das seine Dramen nach der Stanislawskij-Methode inszenierte. »Waiting for Lefty« (1935; deutsch »Warten auf Lefty«), eines der bekanntesten amerikanischen Agitpropstücke, greift einen Taxistreik auf und gestaltet den Theaterraum zur Gewerkschaftsversammlung. Odets verfasste auch zahlreiche Drehbücher.
